history and material selection

The use of sand for water filtration can be traced back hundreds of years when early settlers discovered that passing water through beds of sand produced clearer water. However, it wasn't until the early 20th century that systematic sand filtration began emerging.

A major development was in the 1920s when engineers started experimenting with using crushed quartz sand instead of natural sands for its hardness, durability and high purity. Quartz is nearly inert and resistant to weathering, making it ideal for consistent long-term performance. This established the widespread use of engineered quartz sand in filtration.

In the following decades, significant research was conducted to determine optimal quartz properties. It was found that high silica content above 95%, angular and spherical shapes, and narrow granule size distributions between 0.35-1mm delivered maximized treatment.

These findings led to the standardization of filter sand material specifications. Well-rounded quartz grains with low solubility in the recommended size range are now routinely used. Their hardness and porosity allows particles to be mechanically trapped without clogging.

Additional advancements included requirements for filter sand to be washed, dried and sterile when used for potable water. This ensured leaching and bacterial contamination risks were minimized.

Today, quartz remains the premier material for sand filters due to its consistent availability, mechanical strength and proven water treatment effectiveness supported by extensive historical use. Proper quartz grade selection ensures filters can optimize removal of solids and turbidity from water sources.
